Online proctoring is a kind of remote invigilation when you take an exam outside the campus area of an institute such as in the comfort of your home or office while being monitored with the help of monitoring software, video images, microphones etc. to prevent the students from engaging in fraud.
The different forms on proctoring include:
Live proctoring: It is one of the oldest forms whereby a proctor monitors the students in real time via webcam.
Proctoring via recording: A proctor watches an accelerated video sometime after the exam is over.
Automated proctoring: A proctor is assisted by a software that can catch and highlight doubtful moments.
One of the biggest advantages of online proctoring is that it can be tested at any time or location. Some institutions even use a combination of all the three forms for exam proctoring services. However, it has faced some complications in practice because in extreme cases it is said to conflict with privacy legislation.
To avoid this struggle, institutions can clearly mention in their privacy statements about the specific purpose of the online proctoring and the fact that the data that is collected would not be used for any other purpose than specified. After all, camera images are considered to be very personal data and any institute cannot be allowed to save them without having a legitimate purpose behind it. Otherwise, there can be huge fine against the establishment. Furthermore, a student should be given the right to refuse a method of testing, if they feel any discomfort as it is important to respect the independent status of a student in relation to their institution.
In some institutes, it is possible for a student to schedule an in-person proctor for online proctored exams where they are allowed to nominate a proctor. The proctor can be anyone who has, in his or her profession, agreed to uphold a code of ethics. However, the students cannot be permitted to choose a proctor who is related to them in anyway such as a family member, a friend or simply anyone with whom a conflict of interest may exist.
In cases where its mandatory for students to appear for an online exam at a specific location, there are a number of precautionary actions taken to restrict the students from cheating or impersonating. For example, students are not allowed to take any notes, calculators, course materials, cell phones, tablets, and/or PDA’s, or other materials into the exam. Also, they are required to verify their identity in-person by showing a government-issued identity card to the proctor.
As a matter of fact, it becomes easier for students to not go by the rules when they are giving an exam outside the institution, for example at home, as compared to testing in a controlled campus. In that case, proctoring with a high-level security can also prove to be ineffective. To resolve this, teachers could potentially take a different educational approach by creating exams that are less vulnerable to fraud, for example, more exams in essay format.
